THE STONEMASON: THE SURPRISINGLY ELUSIVE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION

The Stonemason, first English edition, published by Picador.

The Stonemason, first English edition

Picador, London, 1997

First English edition, first printing with complete numberline (135798642) on the copyright page. Softcover, 22.3 x 14 cm, 133 numbered pages. Publisher’s white wrapper lettered in black. The front cover features a detail of the illustration by Chip Kidd made for the first American edition. It is worth to note that the title is without the capital “T”. The back cover reads “A PICADOR PAPERBACK ORIGINAL” and features a photo of McCarthy by Marion Ettlinger, three praise by Chicago Tribune, New York Times, and New Republic. It also mentions the price “UK £6.99”.

CONDITION: a near fine copy.

Published on September 19, 1997, at £6.99, in a print run of 5,088 copies.

The source of the date of publication and the number of copies printed is the Picador Archive.

COLLECTING TOPICS: this is a surprisingly elusive edition, lacking in the main private collections. A copy, in worse condition than this one, is part of the Woolmer collection. Rare Book Hub lists no copies at auction. In October 2025, Abebooks listed just one copy in very bad condition. Scarce.

I am not aware of signed or inscribed copies.
