The Crossing early proof, second state, front cover and spine.

The Crossing, early uncorrected proof, second state.

Knopf, New York, 1994

Early uncorrected proof of the first edition, second state. Softcover, 28 x 21.5 cm, 421 numbered pages, consisting in the photocopy of the proof pages bound in clear acetate front cover, black cardboard back cover and black adhesive card spine. Nine pages, including title page, half title pages etc., mistakenly bound between pages 10 and 11. The front cover mentions “The Crossing” as title, “15 June1994” as date of publication, price of “$23”, and a trade edition first printing of 150,000 copies. (APG, 007b; FM lot 740)

CONDITION: near fine.

Issued on March 21, 1994, in possibly 100 copies.

The source of the date in which this proof was released is the line printed at the page bottoms. Gary Fisketjon, who was the editor of the book at Knopf, told me that around 100 copies were issued to be distributed to booksellers. Howard Woolmer, in his unpublished notes for a bibliography of McCarthy, notices that Knopf rarely printed more than 200 copies of these early formats.

Copies with promotional material and dustjacket mock-up stapled to the front cover are noted.

COLLECTING TOPICS: un uncommon proof. I am not aware of signed or inscribed copies.

The Croosing early proof, second state: the first page with the date in which it was printed at the bottom.
