Despite the fact that the number line begins with “1” rather than “0,” as is customary for Einaudi’s first printings, it remains uncertain whether this represents a second printing, as sometimes claimed. The publisher’s records indicate a first printing of 14,000 copies released on March 7. Therefore, if this were a second printing, it would have to be a “second printing before publication,” since it was printed in February—an unlikely scenario given the high initial print run. Moreover, in fifteen years of collecting McCarthy, I have never encountered copies with a number line starting with “0” or “2.” Thus, the only certain thing is the uncertainty.

Preceded by the Einaudi’s “Amici del Libro” limited edition.
