Cities of the Plain, first edition, signed limited issue

Knopf, New York, 1998.

First edition, first printing with ”First edition” stated on the copyright page. Signed state, limited to one thousand copies signed by McCarthy on a limitation page tipped in the book. The page states that this edition was “especially prepared for friends of the author and publisher”. This copy is signed in greenish-black ink. Hardcover, 21,9 x 14,7 cm., 291 numbered pages. Publisher’s black paper covered and cloth boards lettered in gilt on the spine and with “CM” initials also in gilt on the front panel. Top text-block edge stained in brick red. White dust-jacket lettered in black and white on brick red boxes by Chip Kidd, with a photograph by Larry Schwarm on the front cover and another of McCarthy by Marion Ettlinger on the back flap; with price of “FPT USA $24.00 / CANADA $33.50” on the front flap and no code at the bottom of back flap. (APG, 010d).

CONDITION: fine book in a fine dustjacket. A beautiful copy.

The first trade edition was published on May, 18 and this limited issue was most probably released simultaneously or a few days before. 

COLLECTING TOPICS: a relatively common book. Given the high number of copies signed by the author, even examples in fine conditions are not very hard to find.
