A travel through a McCarthy first editions collection

A first edition inscribed to Augusta Britt hits the market. Is it the first of many?

Augusta Britt’s first edition of Suttree: the inscription by McCarthy

Augusta Britt, the woman who had a longtime and troubled relationship with Cormac McCarthy and revealed it in an interview published by Vanity Fair a year ago, has apparently decided to sell the books McCarthy inscribed to her.

The first to reach the market is a first edition of Suttree, inscribed “For Augusta / With all my love / Cormac.” Apparently, during their time in Nashville, some of McCarthy’s friends—who served as the basis for characters in the novel—also signed the book: “For Augusta / Fred L. Cash”; “Best Wishes / Augusta, / Tom Clancy”; and “To Augusta a real nice friend / J. Bone.”

Britt has consigned the book to Bookmans, a bookseller based in Tucson, where she lives, to sell it on her behalf. It is undoubtedly an important copy, and if other items were to follow, it would mark a key event for collectors.
