Uncorrected proof of the first edition, fourth state. Softcover, 21 x 13.6, 297 numbered pages. Beige wrappers lettered in black on the spine and front cover. The front panel reads “Volume One of The Border Trilogy” and “4 MAY 1992” both in print (APG, 006e).
Inscribed in dark blue ink by McCarthy to his friend and collector Philip Murray on the half title page: “For Phillip [sic] Murray / All the best / Cormac” (F&M lot 740).
CONDITION: near fine.
PROVENANCE: From the Philip Murray collection. Purchased from the Birmingham book dealer First and Fine in 2020.
Issued between January and April, 1992, in 750 copies (including all four states).
COLLECTING TOPICS: signed or inscribed copies of this proof are scarce. However, copies inscribed to known individual are genuinely rare. I have encountered only three of them. This and that inscribed (in a later hand, though) to Laurence Gonzales, are the best
